Lake Euramoo: The Tablelands’ Hidden Twin Maar Lake
Lake Euramoo is unique among the Atherton Tablelands’ volcanic lakes — it is a twin maar, formed by two separate volcanic craters that merged to create a figure-eight shaped lake surrounded by paperbark wetland and rainforest. It is smaller and less visited than Lake Eacham or Lake Barrine, and that relative obscurity is precisely its appeal.
A boardwalk winds through the paperbark wetland that rims the lake, offering excellent birdwatching opportunities — the wetland habitat supports species that the more open crater lakes don’t provide for, including ducks, herons, and a variety of waders that congregate in the shallower areas. The overall character of the place is peaceful in a way that feels genuinely undisturbed rather than simply quiet — a lake that has been going about its business for hundreds of thousands of years with minimal interference.

WeatherLake Euramoo is located on the road between Yungaburra and Malanda, making it easy to include in a Tablelands driving day alongside Lake Eacham and the Millaa Millaa waterfall country to the south. The visit itself takes around 30 to 45 minutes for a leisurely boardwalk circuit. No swimming facilities are provided, and the lake is visited for its wildlife and landscape rather than its recreational opportunities.
