Malanda Falls: Where the North Johnstone River Meets the Community Pool
Malanda Falls is one of the most accessible and genuinely enjoyable waterfall swimming experiences in Far North Queensland, a wide, impressive falls on the North Johnstone River that drops directly into a council-managed swimming pool, equipped with changing rooms, showers, and a grassy picnic area that has been a beloved gathering spot for Tablelands families for generations.
The falls are impressive at any time of year but genuinely dramatic in the wet season, when the North Johnstone runs full and the water crashes over the wide rock lip with a power that can be felt from the picnic area. The pool below is swimmable for most of the year, cleared for swimming when the water is safe and the falls are running at appropriate levels. The council facility makes the whole experience clean, well-organised, and family-friendly in a way that many of the Tablelands’ wilder waterfall swimming spots are not.
Malanda Falls Environmental Centre, adjacent to the pool, provides excellent interpretation of the surrounding ecology and the cultural history of the area, including the volcanic geology that created the landscape and the rainforest that has grown from it. Entry to the pool is a small fee; the Environmental Centre is typically free. The surrounding park has excellent birdlife and is a pleasant spot for an hour or two even when swimming conditions are not ideal.
A Hot Getaways destination. Where Care is Our Compass.
Travel Kindly
At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit the Atherton Tablelands, we gently ask you to:
- Tread lightly — stay on tracks and lookouts, and take special care around waterfalls, which can be slippery and swift.
- Respect the wildlife — never feed the platypus, tree-kangaroos or birds, and observe them quietly from a distance.
- Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
- Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
- Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.
Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
