“Two days on the Atherton Tablelands isn’t enough to see everything — but it’s enough to fall in love with the place, which is probably the more important outcome.”

An Atherton Tablelands Itinerary: The Best of the Region in Two Days

The Atherton Tablelands rewards slow travel, but even visitors with limited time can experience its essential character if they plan well. This itinerary covers the highlights of a two-day visit — the waterfalls, the crater lakes, the wildlife, the food, and the towns that give the Tablelands its distinctive personality.

Day One: Lakes, Wildlife and Yungaburra

Start early at Lake Eacham — arrive before 8am if possible, when the water is mirror-still and the wildlife is at its most active. Walk the lake circuit trail, watch for water dragons, kingfishers, and possibly a turtle or two. From there, drive to Lake Barrine for morning tea at the historic Lake Barrine Tea House, one of the loveliest stops in the region. Continue to Yungaburra for lunch and a wander through the village. At dusk, head to Peterson Creek for platypus viewing — one of the most reliable wild platypus spots in Australia.

Day Two: Waterfalls and the Waterfall Circuit

Dedicate the second day to the Waterfall Circuit. Start at Millaa Millaa Falls for the classic postcard view, then continue to Zillie Falls, Ellinjaa Falls, and Mungalli Falls. Lunch in Millaa Millaa before driving to Malanda Falls for a dip in the pool if conditions allow. On the way back north, stop at the Cathedral Fig Tree and the Curtain Fig Tree — two of the most extraordinary living things you’ll encounter anywhere in Australia. Return via Yungaburra or drive the tableland edge road for views over the coast.

If you have a third day, add Hasties Swamp for birdwatching, Chillagoe Caves for geological drama, or the Mareeba coffee and chocolate trail for something more indulgent.

A Hot Getaways destination. Where Care is Our Compass.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit the Atherton Tablelands, we gently ask you to:

  • Tread lightly — stay on tracks and lookouts, and take special care around waterfalls, which can be slippery and swift.
  • Respect the wildlife — never feed the platypus, tree-kangaroos or birds, and observe them quietly from a distance.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
