“Mena Creek Falls drops through some of the most intact tropical rainforest in Australia, and the journey to find it is as rewarding as the falls themselves.”
Mena Creek Falls: A Rewarding Walk in the Southern Tablelands Forest
Mena Creek Falls is one of the Atherton Tablelands’ more off-the-beaten-track waterfall experiences — a series of cascades in Wooroonooran National Park that require a genuine walk to reach, through tropical rainforest of remarkable quality and age. For visitors who want more from their waterfall experience than a car park and a lookout, Mena Creek is exactly what they’re looking for.
The walk to the falls passes through old-growth rainforest on the southern edge of the Tablelands, in the zone where the upland rainforest transitions toward the lower coastal forests. The vegetation is dense and the birdlife is exceptional — cassowaries are occasionally seen on this trail, as well as a range of rainforest specialists including Lewin’s honeyeater and the spectacular Ulysses butterfly. The sound of the falls builds as you descend, and emerging from the forest onto the viewing platform above the cascade is a moment of real arrival.
Mena Creek Falls can be combined with visits to other Wooroonooran National Park waterfall sites on a longer southern Tablelands waterfall day. Allow at least 3 to 4 hours for the return walk and time at the falls. Good shoes and plenty of water are essential — this is a real walk, not a stroll.
